Main Road (A259)

Street guide, Fishbourne

The A259 runs through Fishbourne as the main coast road, connecting Chichester to the east with Bosham, Emsworth, and Havant to the west. Within the village, the road is known locally as Main Road, though its classified name is the A259. The road carries heavy traffic at peak times and divides Old Fishbourne to the south from New Fishbourne to the north. The roundabout junction with Fishbourne Road is the main intersection. Bus stops along the road serve the village, and the approach to the Roman Palace is signposted from the eastbound carriageway. The road has been both the making and the frustration of the village: it provides connections but brings noise, congestion, and a barrier between the two halves of the settlement.
