Salterns Way
The walking and cycling route through the harbour area
Salterns Way is a waymarked walking and cycling route that runs from Chichester to East Head at West Wittering, passing through the harbour landscape that lies south of Fishbourne. The route follows quiet lanes, canal towpaths, and field-edge paths, providing a traffic-free or low-traffic corridor through one of the most attractive parts of the Chichester district.
The route passes through Fishbourne's hinterland, crossing the flat farmland between the village and the harbour shore. The section between Chichester and Dell Quay follows the Chichester Canal towpath and then country lanes, and is particularly popular with families and leisure cyclists.
The full route from Chichester to East Head is about seven miles, and the flat terrain makes it accessible to walkers and cyclists of all abilities. The surface is a mix of tarmac, compacted gravel, and field paths, with some sections that can be muddy in winter.
For Fishbourne residents, Salterns Way provides a ready-made recreational route on the doorstep. The path connects the village to the harbour, the canal, and the beaches at West Wittering without requiring car travel. It is one of the most pleasant ways to explore the area between the village and the sea.
The route is waymarked with distinctive signs and is maintained by West Sussex County Council. Maps and guides are available from the Chichester Harbour Conservancy and from local cycling and walking groups.
