Fishbourne Roman Palace built

undefined

The great palace at Fishbourne was constructed around AD 75, replacing earlier buildings on the site. Arranged around a formal garden with four wings, the palace was the largest Roman residential building in Britain. The north wing contained rooms with elaborate mosaic floors, including the celebrated Cupid on a Dolphin design. The building had underfloor heating, bathhouses, painted wall plaster, and imported marble, demonstrating that its owner was a person of exceptional wealth and status. The palace is traditionally attributed to Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus, a local British client king who collaborated with Rome.
