Roman military supply base established at Fishbourne
undefined
Shortly after the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43, a military supply base was established at Fishbourne, exploiting the harbour as a landing point for troops and equipment. The harbour was deeper and more navigable in the Roman period, and the site provided a sheltered anchorage on the route between the coast and the interior. Archaeological evidence shows timber granaries, storage buildings, and other infrastructure associated with a logistics depot. This supply base was the first stage in a sequence of development that would lead, within thirty years, to the construction of the great palace.
