Fishbourne Roman Palace museum opens to the public
undefined
The museum building covering the north wing of the Roman Palace opened to the public in 1968, allowing visitors to view the mosaics and archaeological remains in situ. The museum was built over the excavated remains to protect them from the elements while providing public access. The Sussex Archaeological Society managed the site, and it quickly became one of the most visited archaeological attractions in Britain. The museum has been updated and expanded over the decades but continues to fulfil its original purpose of protecting and displaying the palace remains.
